THE VC’S VISION FOR COMPASSION: NURTURING IMPACT THAT IS TRULY SEEN AND FELT

Following the Perutusan NC, Dato’ Seri Vice-Chancellor’s visit to the BJIM booth reaffirmed his aspiration for Kampung Angkat MADANI to evolve into a national model of inclusive social wellness. He emphasized that university engagement must go beyond project—towards building living ecosystems where communities experience real transformation.
Guided by this vision, Universiti Sains Malaysia’s COMPASSION framework has transformed the B40 community of Sungai Nibong into a dynamic ecosystem of empowerment, resilience, and shared leadership. Through a university–community co-creation approach, USM addressed critical gaps in digital readiness, youth development, health awareness, and community infrastructure by integrating education, entrepreneurship, wellness, spirituality, and recreation into multifunctional community hubs.
More than 2,000 residents have been engaged, 100 youths empowered through entrepreneurship, 400 individuals supported through health screenings, and key facilities upgraded—including a digital laboratory, Surau An-Nur as a one-stop community centre, and a futsal hub—advancing SDGs 3, 4, 8, 11, and 17. Beyond numbers, COMPASSION has cultivated local leadership, strengthened social cohesion, and embedded sustainable pathways for growth.
Looking ahead to 2026, the COMPASSION ecosystem will continue to expand beyond academia through community leadership and social enterprise—ensuring that impact is not only measured, but genuinely experienced: seen and felt by the people, with the people.
