A BJIM TEAMBUILDING THROWBACK- A GENTLE RAMADHAN RELECTION

"Forward", "Backward", "Jump-Jump", “Bum-Bum”, "Stop": A Water Rafting Reflection on Leadership, Teamwork, Discipline, Humility & COMPASSION
*(A BJIM Teambuilding Throwback — a gentle Ramadhan reflection)
Earlier this year, on 8 February 2026, the Bahagian Jaringan Industri & Masyarakat (BJIM), USM convened in Gopeng, Perak for a three-day programme—Pemerkasaan Pelan Strategik BJIM serta Pengukuhan Amalan Kerja Berpasukan—bringing together all BJIM team to align strategic priorities, strengthen cross-functional collaboration, and reinforce our shared commitment to advancing industry linkages, community engagement, and sustainability in line with the university’s aspirations. Beyond the discussions and plans, it was through moments like our water rafting teambuilding that these values were truly lived.
Our water rafting experience was more than an adventure—it became a living classroom on leadership, discipline, humility, and COMPASSION. As Ramadhan draws to a close, this memory feels more meaningful than ever—a quiet reminder of the values we have been trying to nurture throughout this blessed month.
From the moment we stepped into the raft, one lesson was immediately clear: humility comes before action. No matter our titles, experiences, or confidence, the guide was the captain. His instructions were not suggestions—they were essential. In that moment, we learned to set aside ego and follow with discipline, even when we felt we already knew enough. True teamwork begins with the humility to listen and the discipline to follow.
From the moment the raft entered the river, it was clear that nature does not follow plans. The river responds only to teamwork and character, just like real leadership—and perhaps, just like life itself.
There were moments when we moved forward smoothly. Every paddle was in rhythm, every command clear, every person focused. Progress happened because we served each other with purpose and compassion, keeping the team aligned and motivated.
Sometimes, to stay safe or find a better path, we had to paddle backward intentionally. It wasn’t failure—it was a shared, humble choice to pause, reassess, and reposition for the good of the team. Leadership, we learned, is not always about moving ahead—it is about moving wisely, together.
The JUMP-JUMP moments came when the boat got stuck. Here, we practiced compassionate discipline: controlling frustration, communicating calmly, helping each other, and staying patient until the problem was solved. True teamwork is tested not when waters are calm, but when the boat is stuck.
Then came the intense BUM-BUM moments—shooting through steep rapids. Fear and pressure could have caused panic, but we looked out for each other, encouraged one another, stayed focused, and acted with courage. Discipline kept the team effective; compassion kept the team united.
When the guide shouted STOP, we learned one of the hardest lessons—the discipline to pause. Sometimes compassion means slowing down, checking in on teammates, and ensuring everyone is safe before moving again.
From the river, we understood that being compassionate and disciplined in teamwork is not easy, but it is the key to success. It requires constant effort, awareness, and care—lessons that Ramadhan gently reinforces within us.
It means:
Speaking kindly, even under pressure
Listening before reacting
Following instructions with humility
Correcting mistakes without humiliating others
Putting team safety above personal ego
Staying calm when challenges appear
Encouraging more than complaining
Compassionate discipline is not softness. It is strength with heart, firmness with care, and high standards delivered with respect.
As we finished the journey, we realized that effective teamwork always follows a shared rhythm:
Forward – with commitment
Backward – with humility and wisdom
Jump-jump – with patience
Bum-bum – with courage
Stop – with discipline
And through it all, the principle remains: be disciplined enough to stay together, be compassionate enough to care for one another.
Because true success is never achieved by one person. It is achieved as WE.
Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir Batin.
May the lessons from the river and the quiet strength of Ramadhan continue to guide us—beyond the journey, into who we become next.
*Note:
Rafting Command Keywords
During water rafting, the guide uses key commands to coordinate the team:
Forward (paddle ahead), Backward (paddle back), Jump-Jump (synchronize movements), Bum-Bum (collective rhythm/action), and Stop (cease paddling). Participants must follow instructions promptly for safety and effective maneuvering.
