BEYOND IMPROVEMENT: THE URGENT NEED FOR VALUE CREATION AND SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) continues to strengthen its role in advancing sustainable development through strategic partnerships and community engagement initiatives.
At the 11th Partners in Accelerating SDGs Meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Izzuddin Syakir Ishak, Director of the Community Network Office, shared a success story highlighting how USM academics have contributed to improving community wellbeing through the introduction of innovative solutions and knowledge-driven interventions.
The session provided a platform for partners to exchange updates on current initiatives, discuss key progress and developments, and explore opportunities for joint actions aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) priorities.
In his remarks, Dr. Syakir emphasized a critical concern: while many initiatives have successfully improved community conditions, the next phase must focus on creating tangible value beyond the improvement stage, followed by sustained community empowerment. This transition is essential to enable communities to become more resilient, self-reliant, and capable of sustaining long-term development outcomes.
As part of the engagement, the delegation also visited Dapur Digital by KRT Seri Perlis, witnessing firsthand how an urban community works collectively to improve their wellbeing through digitalization, entrepreneurship, and shared community leadership. The visit highlighted the inspiring success story of the Pepper Lab initiative, which demonstrates how local innovation, when supported by partnerships and capacity building, can evolve from a small community project into a sustainable livelihood platform.
These experiences reaffirm that the true measure of community engagement is not only improvement, but the ability to translate innovation into lasting value, ownership, and empowerment for the community.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment among partners to strengthen collaboration and identify practical next steps toward translating community improvements into long-term community resilience and impact.
